A recent article in The Economist (Vol 418 No 8992, June 4, 1996) states that free speech, the basis for all liberties, is under attack on several fronts. Part of this attack stems from political correctness, “the idea that people and groups have a right not to be offended. But if I have a right not to be offended, that means that someone must police what you say about me, or about the things I hold dear, such as my ethnic group, religion, or even political beliefs. Since offense is subjective, the power to police is both vast and arbitrary.” (p 9). This is dangerous for our freedoms and for progress for if we are to become better we must be able to freely express various views.
The article goes on to say that the University of California suggested that ‘it is a racist “micro-aggression” to say that “America is a land of opportunity”, because it could be taken to imply that those who do not succeed have only themselves to blame.’ The stupidity of this is absolutely unbelievable but by no means rare. Therefore, I sought to research and present other such idiotic gems. They include:
The above examples are quite absurd yet someone has come up with the absurdities and many others have accepted them. This masks the more serious implications of restriction of free speech. Consider the use of repression by certain governments and the laws of blasphemy which ban debate about religious matters.
Many countries have laws against blasphemy, including 14 in Europe. Islamic governments which punish blasphemy against Islam want the ban on insulting religion written into international law. The Economist (June 4, 2016, p 54) reveals that some Western judges agree. A Danish court ruled in February that burning the Koran was criminal hate speech, thus reviving a law that hasn’t been used to convict anyone since 1946. Europe is also full of archaic laws that criminalise certain kinds of political speech.
Free speech underpins all freedoms and is the basis for betterment of societies and all our institutions. Political correctness often leads to absurdities and is a restriction of the freedom to speak and a means to mould society in a particular manner. Such restrictions must be resisted.
There seem to be an unending list of horrors and injustices in this world. One recently exposed by Amnesty International is an eight year prison sentence given to a young lady who suffered a miscarriage.
Amnesty International report that Belen, a 27 year old woman, is serving an eight year prison sentence in Argentina after a court ruled that she was guilty of murder after suffering a miscarriage in a public hospital.
It is hard to imagine any just reasoning for the imposition of a prison sentence for miscarriage. Not only does the woman involved suffer the loss of a child but also a loss of liberty.
Amnesty International ask us to act by writing a letter to call on the authorities in Argentina to release Belen immediately and to overturn the archaic law that punishes women for suffering miscarriages.
Please help Belen. The action page will produce the letter for you and email it, if you wish. Otherwise you can download the text and place it in a letter for posting.
Dearest one I loved you too
From the moment that you came
You became a part of me my girl
And life was not the same.
Thank you for your love my child
You’re more wonderful than I can say
Because of you I’m still alive
And look forward to each day.
And I know that you do love me
It’s something I can tell
And if you ever needed me to
I would die for you as well.
If I could give you happiness
For all eternity
I’d wrap it up in finest dreams
And say “Here it is from me”.
Oh dearest one, my little girl
I’m your father and your friend
No matter where life leads us
Our love can never end.

The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) has warned the public to beware of scammers impersonating the ATO and demanding payment of tax debts. These scammers netted more than $174,000 in April 2016 with iTunes and pre-paid Visa gift cards now being demanded as a form of tax debt payment.
Assistant Commissioner Janine Clark said that “in many cases scammers request payments that are either non-existent or unexpected. By the time these scams are reported to us, the cards have already been on-sold or redeemed by the scammers. The scammers don’t need the actual physical card. They just need the gift card number, which they get victims to read over the phone.”
“What we’re most concerned about is that vulnerable Australians who have little interaction with us are not only being led to believe this is a legitimate request for payment from the ATO but they are giving out personal information such as their tax file number.” Provision of personal information to an unauthorised person opens up further opportunity for identity theft and fraud.
The ATO will never request the payment of a tax debt via gift or pre-paid cards such as iTunes and Visa cards. Nor will they ask for direct credit to be paid to a personal bank account. If the person calling you is rude and aggressive, threatening police or legal action if you don’t do something immediately – it’s not the ATO.
Miss Clark went on to say “if you do have a debt, we would have written to you first. If we do ring you, our staff will identify themselves and let you know how you can call us back. “If you think you’ve been scammed or would like to confirm the legitimacy of an ATO call or letter, phone us on 1800 008 540,” Ms Clark said.
Other scams include those received by email or on a mobile phone offering a tax refund and requiring the completion of a form or a click on a link. These lead to bogus websites which ask for personal information including your mobile phone number and credit card details. By clicking on the link and providing this information you are potentially exposing yourself to identity theft.
If you are unsure about a call, email or a text contact your accountant of the ATO. See the ATO’s How to verify or report a scam for information about scams and how to report them.
Dear one let me tell you
That I loved you from the start
When you cried I felt so helpless
When you smiled you stole my heart.
I planned for you great happiness
Give you everything that’s mine
If you ever needed me to
I would die for you each time.
Though now I never see you
I pray to God above
That He grants you happiness
That He fills your life with love.
Sometimes I think it’s possible
That you may love me too
And one day you will hold me tight
And say “Daddy I love you”.
But I know that I’m a dreamer
That it may never be
Life has taken you away
So close, but far from me.

Ritual killings of people with albinism have prompted Amnesty International to ask us for help by signing an online petition to implore the government of Malawi to stop these atrocities. Please help.
The Amnesty International call is reproduced below.
Ritual killings are on the rise in the African nation of Malawi. People with the genetic condition of albinism are at grave risk of being hunted for their bones, which are then sold for ritual uses.
Albinism is a rare condition where people are born with a lack of pigmentation in their hair, skin and eyes.
With these disturbing killings on the rise in Malawi, people with albinism are living in fear of being hunted for their bones and body parts, which are then sold for ritual uses. Children are at particular risk, with parents often having to withdraw their kids from school. The latest victims are 2-year-old Whitney and 9-year-old Harry who were abducted from their homes and brutally murdered.
Last year alone there were 45 incidents of attempted murder and abduction. It’s high time the Malawi Government stopped just condemning the attacks and started taking urgent steps to protect these vulnerable people.
Update 5/05/16: The latest murder – David Fletcher, a teenage boy with albinism from Malawi who went missing on 24 April has been found dead in Mozambique with his hands and feet chopped off. This must stop now! Call on the President to take immediate action.
Such horrors always seem to go unreported in our country. It was interesting that the biggest media story of the day today was the fact that the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have a pet hamster named Marvin. Are we really that small-minded that we would rather know facts of such insignificance rather than the existence of these repugnant crimes?
Conflict, hatred, war, prejudice, fear and many other ills all seem to stem from the focus on differences between people. However, Ewan McGregor, in Long way round, made a simple yet profound statement. He said “we’ve come this far and people’s faces have changed and people’s houses have changed and people’s beliefs may have changed but ultimately we’re not any different from one another…We all love our kids, we all need somewhere to sleep, we all need some food and we’re not all that different. The world isn’t that big a place, what a mess we’re making, what a mess is being made of the world and, you know, we’re all just the same.”
This is a fundamental truth. When looking at the world from the point of view that we are all human beings with the need to survive, have sufficient food and water, somewhere safe to live and sleep, love and care for family and friends it must surely bring us closer together. Take away the peripheral and unimportant differences of race, colour, religion, sexuality etc and we find that we are all here sharing the only world we have, trying to do the best we can, the best way we know how. Rather than focusing on complexities and differences perhaps a consideration of this simple truth will unite us in the quest to enjoy a peaceful and more meaningful life, a life shared with our human brothers and sisters.
World peace and end to poverty, how easy it seems to be, how easy it should be.
This world was never meant to hold a soul like you
Emptiness has been left to fill almost everything we do
But love is everlasting though it may take a while
We’ll hold you in our arms again and get lost within your smile.
It’s been four long years since you left this world
To find God’s peace alone
But we know that someday we’ll hear your voice
An Angel, to lead us home.
David we miss you.
